The TOEFL was designed to assess the English language proficiency of non-native English speakers. It is required by many American universities for admission if the applicant is a non-native speaker. Performing very well on the test may grant an applicant access to a scholarship. A plethora of government agencies, businesses, and institutions rely on the test for admission purposes. The TOEFL is composed of four components: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. The test tries to holistically assess a student’s ability to communicate and understand English.
